After two nights in Girdwood, we caught the early morning train to Seward. The smoke from the Swan Lake fire really limited our views of the various glaciers that one can normally see on the journey south. After arriving in Seward, we took a leisurely walk around town and then enjoyed a lazy afternoon. The plan had been to check out the trail on Mount Marathon that is used for the annual Fourth of July race, but the smoke was just too thick. Instead, I got up at 5 AM the next morning to check out the trail before we caught the boat for the next part of our adventure.
- The bustling Girdwood train station
- Glacier, what glacier?!
- Sights about town
- Details about the Mount Marathon race course – I did the Roots Trail section at the bottom and decided it was crazy, so switched to the hiking trail!
- I was glad I took a picture of this sign (like it suggests), so that I could bail from the race trail and use the hiking trail instead
- View of the harbor from part way up the Bench Trail
- Mount Marathon bowl from the Skyline Trail
