We saw lots of lightning from distant thunderstorms overnight, but only had one that hit our camp. On Day 5, the big question was whether we would have turquoise or brown water entering when we reached the junction with the Little Colorado River. And the answer was brown! We dodged thunderstorms all day and counted the basketballs in the river from the flash floods that had clearly come through the Little Colorado drainage. After a nice hike to the hilltop ruins above the Unkar Delta, we ran Unkar Rapid and stopped at Upper Rattlesnake for the night.
- Breaking camp at Nankoweap
- Another beautiful sunrise
- Sue taking it all in!
- Our first view of the muddy water coming in from the Little Colorado
- The mixing of green and brown…
- Fortunately, the thunderstorms were always behind us
- Amazing how some rain turns the desert green…
- Looking down on Unkar Rapid
- Our crew at the hilltop ruins: Kerry, Nancy, Jon, Ashley, Joelle, Ben and Rondo (Denice stayed with the boats)
- Running Unkar Rapid – the water was so muddy that there was no whitewater, which made the rapids very hard to read for our guides
- Hanging out at the chair circle at Upper Rattlesnake camp
- Sunset
